embracing summer

As the days lengthen and temperatures rise, the allure of summer beckons with promises of sunshine, outdoor adventures, and a much-needed break from the routine. For employees navigating the demands of work and life, leaning into summer isn't just about enjoying the season—it's about nurturing a crucial balance that enhances well-being, productivity, and overall satisfaction. Here’s why embracing summer is essential for a healthy work/life balance.

1. Renewed Energy and Creativity

Summer brings a natural surge of energy and creativity. Longer daylight hours and warmer weather encourage outdoor activities and new experiences, which can rejuvenate the mind and body. Exposure to natural light and spending time in nature can enhance mood and cognitive function, making employees more productive and innovative when they return to work. We’re spoiled here at Odigo to be headquartered on an island in the Pacific Northwest because everywhere we turn is a nature bath in the form of a beach or a forest to help us unplug and feel grounded. But anywhere you can put your feet in grass is a good opportunity to tickle your creativity and renew your energy!

2. Stress Reduction

Taking time to relax and unwind during summer can significantly reduce stress levels. Whether it's a weekend getaway to the beach or simply enjoying a quiet afternoon in the park, these moments allow employees to decompress and recharge. Reduced stress not only improves mental health but also boosts immune function and overall well-being, leading to better resilience in handling work challenges. Some of our best ideas struck while lounging in a hammock or listening to birds chirping from our deck. We’ve never had any success sitting in front of a screen and willing ourselves to be more productive.

3. Enhanced Relationships

Summer is synonymous with social gatherings, family vacations, and community events. Investing time in these relationships outside of work fosters deeper connections and a stronger support network. Strong social ties are linked to improved mental health and longevity, providing a buffer against workplace stressors and enhancing overall life satisfaction. Full disclosure though … if you’re overwhelmed by conversations all day every day at work, a dog makes an excellent companion—all love, no hard questions.

4. Physical Well-being

Warmer weather encourages physical activity, whether it's swimming, hiking, or playing sports. Engaging in regular exercise not only promotes physical fitness but also releases endorphins that elevate mood and combat stress. Incorporating outdoor workouts into a summer routine can be a refreshing change from indoor gym sessions, making fitness more enjoyable and sustainable. Fun fact, those of us who work in the office during the summer often sneak out to walk around Langley and enjoy a fresh smoothie while we window shop. 10/10 highly recommend.

5. Work/Life Integration

Achieving work/life balance is not just about separating work and personal life—it's about integrating them in a way that promotes harmony and fulfillment. Summer offers opportunities to blend leisure activities with professional development, such as attending outdoor workshops or networking events. This integration allows employees to grow personally and professionally while still prioritizing self-care and relaxation. Of the six of us who are working on island this summer, four are golfers and three are tennis players, so … we occasionally take our meetings to the course (or courts) to play while we think and chat about complex decisions. It’s a game changer.

6. Increased Productivity

Contrary to common belief, taking breaks and embracing summer activities can actually enhance productivity. Studies show that employees who take regular vacations are more productive and creative upon their return. Time away from the office allows for mental clarity, fresh perspectives, and renewed motivation, resulting in improved performance and efficiency in the long run. We can attest to this. It’s why we have an unlimited PTO policy. Because we know that when they return, they consistently return refreshed and inspired to approach work with new energy and motivation!

7. Mental Refreshment

The summer months provide a natural pause for reflection and goal-setting. Whether it's revisiting personal aspirations or career objectives, this period of reflection allows employees to realign their priorities and make informed decisions about their future. Setting aside time for introspection amidst the summer buzz can lead to greater clarity and a sense of purpose both at work and in personal life. It helps that all of Europe is on holiday and most clients in the Americas are also enjoying the long lazy days of summer, so using downtime to refresh mentally is a no-brainer.

8. Cultural Appreciation

Summer often coincides with cultural celebrations and festivals that celebrate diversity and heritage. Participating in these events fosters a sense of belonging and cultural awareness among employees, promoting inclusivity and mutual respect in the workplace. Embracing different traditions and customs enriches perspectives and enhances teamwork, contributing to a more cohesive and supportive work environment. We’re so fortunate that our DEI Coach, Ana, is also an educator, so summers are her opportunity to pivot her focus to our team a bit and lead book clubs or discussions on culturally diverse topics. Looking forward to seeing what this summer brings!

9. Lifelong Learning

Summer is an ideal time for continuous learning and skill development. Whether it's through reading, online courses, or hands-on experiences, employees can expand their knowledge base and acquire new skills that benefit their professional growth. Taking advantage of educational opportunities during summer demonstrates a commitment to lifelong learning and personal improvement, which are valuable assets in today's dynamic workplace. We cannot tell you how impressed we are with our interns this summer! Not only are they bringing new skills and perspectives to the team, but they’re inspiring the rest of us to learn new tricks. More on this topic as the summer unfolds, but we’re excited to learn more about what is emerging in tech these days!

10. Sustainable Work Habits

Finally, embracing summer encourages sustainable work habits that prioritize well-being and work/life balance year-round. By incorporating seasonal rhythms and self-care practices into daily routines, employees can maintain a healthy equilibrium between professional responsibilities and personal fulfillment. This proactive approach not only enhances individual resilience but also contributes to a more positive and productive workplace culture. In fact, a few years ago, during the Pandemic, we instituted team-wide “no meeting Wednesdays.” Those days evolved in alignment with client teams and meetings, but we’ve been encouraging team members to block one day a week for uninterrupted work time, and it’s everyone’s favorite day. We’re bringing back the Wednesday break in the middle of the week this summer, and nobody has complained yet!

Leaning into summer is not just about enjoying the sunshine—it's about nurturing a holistic approach to work and life that prioritizes well-being, creativity, and personal growth. By embracing the opportunities that summer offers for relaxation, social connection, and personal development, employees can cultivate a healthier work/life balance that enhances both their professional success and overall happiness. As the season unfolds, let's seize the chance to rejuvenate, reflect, and reimagine what it means to thrive in all aspects of life.
